AUSLARC Scholarships - Registrations open
AUSLARC provides scholarships for Implanon and IUD training to reduce financial and geographic barriers to long acting reversible contraception (LARC) training.
Fully funded LARC training for health professionals across Australia
AUSLARC Scholarships
AUSLARC is led by Sexual and Reproductive Health Australia (SRHA) in partnership with The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP). This initiative received grant funding from the Australian Government. It includes a national evaluation framework to support long-term impact and sustainability.
Health professionals eligible for fully funded training, must be currently registered with Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
These health professionals include:
- General Practitioners
- Nurse Practitioners
- Registered Nurses
- Midwives
- Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Practitioners
Note: General Practitioners includes those in training.
Note: We understand that midwives and endorsed midwives have a unique scope of practice. Upon applying to enrol in LARC training, midwives should refer to the NMBA decision-making framework to guide their practice and decision making. Midwives who would like further support in exploring suitable training options are encouraged to contact their state Sexual and Reproductive Health organisation (listed under the Approved LARC Training Providers tab below).
Note: We understand that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Practitioners have a varied scope of practice across jurisdictions. Upon applying to enrol in contraceptive implant (LARC) training, practitioners should confirm local requirements with their health service or jurisdictional authority. The NAATSIHWP Scope of Practice document highlights how additional training and qualifications can inform a practitioner’s full scope of practice, where permitted under relevant legislation.
- Fully funded Implanon and IUD training delivered by SRHA Sexual and Reproductive Health Organisations in every state and territory
- Travel reimbursement for eligible participants travelling more than 100 km to attend training
- Streamlined online access via a new centralised portal for registration, scholarships and reimbursement claims
- RACGP CPD will be recorded for all RACGP members who complete the training. The LARC training will be visible on their CPD statement after completion.
Australia’s LARC uptake is lower than many other developed countries.
AUSLARC aims to:
- Expand access to contraceptive choice, especially outside major cities
- Build workforce capacity in long acting reversible contraception
- Reduce unintended pregnancies
- Support health equity through targeted investment in rural and regional areas

What is the AUSCAPPS network and how can it support LARC training?
The AusCAPPS (Australian Contraception and Abortion Primary Care Practitioner Support) Network is funded by the Australian Government Department of Health, Disability and Ageing, and is part of the SPHERE-CRE at the Monash University. Supported by Sexual and Reproductive Health Australia and key stakeholders, AusCAPPS Network aims to improve women’s access to long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) and early medical abortion (EMA) services in primary care.
GPs, practice nurses, nurse practitioners, midwives, Aboriginal Health Practitioners, community pharmacists, and any clinicians with an AHPRA registration involved in the provision of LARC or EMA are invited to join this online community.
Membership is free and offers:
- Peer discussions and expert clinical advice
- Tools to find local LARC/EMA providers and build networks
- Updates on upcoming education, training, webinars, and events
- Access to evidence-based resources, guidelines, podcasts, and more
Join AusCAPPS Network now as part of your LARC training and support women’s sexual and reproductive health.

Are Enrolled Nurses eligible to apply?
Enrolled Nurses are registered with AHPRA, but their scope of practice doesn’t include inserting long-acting reversible contraception. For that reason, this training is currently only available to health professional with LARC in their scope of practice.
Can I apply for both Implanon and IUD training?
Yes! You’re welcome to apply for both. Please note that you’ll need to submit two separate registrations using different email addresses, as each scholarship registration must be recorded individually for our evaluation purposes.
What courses are eligible for travel and accommodation reimbursement?
Travel and accommodation reimbursement is only available for face-to-face courses when participants need to travel more than 100 km for training. This applies to IUD and Implanon clinical placements. Travel funding is generally not available for Implanon theory or simulation sessions.
How do I claim travel and accommodation reimbursement after completing my training?
- Eligibility:
- As per AUSLARC guidelines (link doc) reimbursement is available if you travelled more than 100km one way to attend your training or clinical placement.
- Only costs that meet the criteria (e.g. transport, accommodation, local transfers, airport parking) will be reimbursed, up to the daily and mileage caps outlined in the scholarship guidelines. Meals and incidentals are not reimbursed.
- How to claim:
- Log back into the SRHA scholarship portal.
- Go to your application and complete the Travel & Accommodation Reimbursement section.
- Upload your receipts (and mileage log if claiming mileage).
- Submit your claim for assessment.
- Assessment:
- Your claim will be assessed against the national reimbursement criteria.
- Eligible costs within the caps will be reimbursed directly to you.
- Important note:
- The AUSLARC scholarship covers your approved LARC training registration fees.
Are Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Practitioners eligible for AUSLARC scholarships?
Yes. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Practitioners are eligible for AUSLARC scholarships where contraceptive implant (LARC) training is within their scope of practice and permitted under relevant state or territory legislation. Scope of practice varies across jurisdictions, and practitioners should confirm local requirements with their health service or jurisdictional authority before enrolling. The NAATSIHWP Scope of Practice document highlights how additional training and qualifications can inform a practitioner’s full scope of practice, where permitted under relevant legislation.
Why can’t I register for the IUD theory or clinical attachment training scholarship in my state or territory?
Some places (SA, NSW, QLD, NT, ACT) have received significant numbers of registrations for IUD theory and clinical attachment training scholarships and WA has reached capacity for contraceptive implant clinical attachment training. The AUSLARC project will deliver scholarships across Australia and scholarships have been equitably allocated to each state and territory to deliver. Due to allocations being exceeded in some states and territories, registration has been closed while current applications are being assessed. Please check back here to see which states are currently open for registrations.
Can I apply for a fully funded scholarship in a state or territory where I don’t provide clinical services?
Applicants are expected to undertake training within their own state or territory. However, exceptions may be considered where local training options are limited due to factors such as distance, travel costs or accessibility, or where training is not currently offered in your state or territory. Please outline this reasoning in your application to assist with assessment.
Is training RACGP CPD approved?
The LARC training and accompanying webinars are fully RACGP CPD Approved. CPD hours will be recorded by the LARC training providers and reflected on participants’ RACGP CPD statements.
Why wasn’t my application accepted?
We appreciate your interest in the AUSLARC scholarship. Due to the high volume of applications and limited places, a number of factors are considered in the selection process. If your application was not accepted, it may be for one or more of the following reasons:
- You did not meet eligibility criteria (for example, AHPRA registration, current clinical role, scope of practice, location).
- The application was not scored highly enough under the national weighting framework (which includes need and service context, readiness and commitment, potential impact, equity and diversity).
- Your location or context may not have been assessed as a higher priority based on the service need.
- Your proposed training timeframe or plan did not align with the required post training service commitment.
- You may have applied for training that is outside your current scope of practice in your jurisdiction.
